The concept of the motorcycle saddlebag actually came from the saddle you use to ride a horse. There are two bags and one hangs over each side of the tail section of your bike. Because there are two of them, there is a lot more room to store your stuff in a motorcycle or street bike saddlebag than you would have in a motorcycle tank bag or tail bag.

Motorcycle saddlebags come in two types: soft saddlebags and hard saddlebags for motorcycles and street bikes. Soft motorcycle saddlebags are generally made from either leather or textile materials. Advantages of soft motorcycle saddlebags include more flexibility (in other words, you can stuff a lot more things into the flexible interior), and they’re easy to mount and remove. While soft saddlebags are more susceptible to hot exhausts and can melt or burn, many now come with protective heat shields to help prevent pipe burn.

Hard motorcycle saddlebags are more permanent than soft saddlebags, but they are fairly easy to remove from your bike, and many come with locking features, so you don’t have to take them off and put them back on wherever you go. Some hard saddlebags for motorcycles also come with removable interior bags so you can take your things with you but leave the actual saddlebags mounted to your bike.

Street bike and motorcycle saddlebags need to be weighted equally on both sides otherwise it can affect your bike’s handling. If you find you don’t have enough stuff to distribute the weight evenly, you may want to consider a motorcycle tail bag instead.
