The '05 CRF linkages are, as the '04 CRF links were, overly progressive. The '05 is, however, stiffer than the '04 throughout the entire range. As a result it gives the feel of a loose beginning to an over accumulation of damping and spring forces that gives a step in the mid stroke.
The RG3 links create a smoother and more exact feel, with no step in the mid stroke and a more confidence inspiring progression. Similar spring rates are usually used for both links (stk vs RG3) and although shock valving could remain the same from the stock link to the RG3 link, considerable improvements can be guaranteed with a link change and valving updates to match (the link).
