Different treads of UTV Tires

There are four main types of treads. There is the directional tread, the symmetrical tread, the asymmetrical tread, and the directional/asymmetrical tread. Directional Treads are meant for high-performance vehicles that need to travel at high speeds on paved road surfaces. They have a V-shaped tread design that aids in draining the water film between the tire and road surface. That helps to prevent hydroplaning at high speeds. Hydroplaning is where the tire slides due to water being trapped between the tire and the road surface. These are meant to be rotated either forwards or backward. They do not perform well in sideways rotation. Directional Asymmetrical Treads have a specific feature that is the V-shape tread for discharging water and the asymmetrical tread for dry surface and cornering. These tires should not be rotated unless they are remounted because they have directional characteristics. These can be used on high-performance vehicles when driving on wet paved surfaces.

Symmetrical Treads are found in most family and passenger cars. It runs quietly and is not for high-performance cars. They have continuous grooves and independent lags across the entire tire surface. These tires perform well in forward, backward, and side rotations. That makes them durable and versatile. The one that is most seen on off-road vehicles like UTVs are the Asymmetrical treads. UTV Tires utlize this style of tread because they are designed to be used as stock, all terrain tire that is best for all types of uses. They are usually marked to indicate which side is the inner side and which is the outer side. The middle sections of these tires are designed to handle wet/snow-covered surfaces while the outer sections of the treads are designed for cornering and dry surfaces.

Mud and Sand UTV Tires

Treads meant for mud or dirt surfaces have a high void ratio. The high void ratio enables the tire to eject mud from the middle section of the tire and outwards. That helps to keep the tire firmly on the road surface. Without that dirt or mud ejection action, the vehicle will aquaplane and slide. Dirt treads also work well when the tire surface is thinner. That allows the tries to sink into the mud and hold onto the firmer layer under the mud.

When it comes to sand surfaces, the treads have little effect. What matters is the width of the tire. The larger that surface f the tire in contact with the sand, the more it will float. Tires for UTVs meant for driving over sand are wide to providing flotation. Without the tire floating on the sand, it will sink up to the chaise level or axle, and the vehicle will be immobilized. Slightly deflating tires not meant for sand surfaces helps to stop increases flotation.
