This allows for the knee panel to operate independently from the leg of the pant. This will help keep the pants on your waist better and keeps you comfortable as you ride.  Durability comes from the 600 Denier nylon on thigh panels and punched nylon blended thigh/crotch panels for comfort. Heat resistance from the leather panels on the inner knees protect from hot exhaust pipes.
