Protective Features

This Leatt dirt bike helmet utilizes a polycarbonate shell for its first line of defense. This durable material provides sufficient protection against impact forces, as well as punctures. The size of the exterior shell has been reduced compared to previous iterations.  This helps prevent additional rotation in a crash, while also shaving off a bit of extra weight.

The Leatt GPX 5.5 dirt bike helmet weighs in at 2.83lbs (1285g), beating out some notable competitors like the Bell Moto-9 Carbon Flex. The optimized protection and weight makes it a no-brainer for competitive riders.

The lightweight Polycarbonate shell is a marvel in its own right. However, Leatt’s Patented 360° Turbine technology takes protection to a whole other level! The interior of the Leatt GPX 5.5 Composite Helmet is lined with “turbines” that help absorb and mitigate direct and rotational forces. These turbines are fashioned out of Armourgel®, a material that hardens upon impact. Which means, the harder these guys get hit, the better they absorb impacts. The protection that this motocross helmet affords scales with the intensity of the impact. This revolutionary technology is only available in Leatt helmets.

Comfort Features

Protection is obviously the most important factor when considering a new helmet. With that being said, you can’t downplay the importance of a comfort out on the track. Thankfully, the Leatt GPX 5.5 Composite is the best of both worlds! The interior of this motocross helmet is lined with plush padding for the ultimate comfort. The low friction cheek pads are especially noteworthy, as they are designed for emergency removal.

Another important comfort feature is ventilation. It doesn’t take long to work up a sweat while swinging your bike around the track. That’s why its critical for helmets to have efficient ventilation. The Leatt GPX 5.5 V15 Helmet has plenty of intake vents that take advantage of your forward momentum to usher in cool air. The back side features honeycomb cutouts as exhaust ports that help expel hot air. The moisture-wicking liner works in tandem with the vent system to keep the rider feeling cool and refreshed!

Helmet Visors

The helmet visor is designed to sheer off in a crash, which is a good thing. Visors have the propensity to cause additional injury to the rider when they spike into the ground. The last thing you want from your protective gear is for it to cause more injuries. So don’t get too attached to your helmet visor. Leatt GPX helmet visors are available on the cheap, in every color to match your new helmet!

Corey Wright
I'm Corey, ever since I was little I loved bicycles. My first first bike was a mongoose and I took that thing everywhere. I would race the neighbor kids and always won, good times. Being older now my love of riding hasn't changed. I have shifted more into mountain biking though. Nothing too intense. I am in it for a nice ride and the scenery these days,
