Motocross 2012 – Race Report (Southwick)

The boys of MX returned to the track this past weekend in Southwick, and on a cool day we saw the best in the business handle his business; Ryan Dungey pulls a 1/2 in the motos and basically sealed up the  2012 Motocross crown. A tough/sandy track and a little rain were no match for the man on the KTM, and despite a fall in moto2 he was able to strap up his dirtbike boots and roll thru the field and get to that podium once again. A banner year for Dungey, which also made it no surprise that later in the day he was named to head the American team in the Moto Des Nations later in the year. A fabulous crowd of MX maniacs braved the weather and created an awesome racing environment- Southwick is a ‘racing town’, in every sense of the term!

In the Lites Division, the overall points picture gets a little more clear with each passing event, and this week we saw Blake Baggett get a bit of breathing room in the overall with a 3/1 performance here in Southwick. But he can still be caught! Eli Tomac had a 1/3 day to inch closer and Justin Barcia still lurks in the overall hunt despite having a disappointing showing here in Southwick- mustering a meager 7/4 in the motos. I’m sure he’d like a ‘do-over’ here in Southwick, but the numbers are in the books! We’ll see if anyone can come close to challenging Baggett next week, but he looks to be the odds-on favorite for the title here in 2012.

As far as the 450cc class is concerned, Ryan Dungey is a one-man gang- and he has been mauling the field now for an entire summer. The beat went on this week in Southwick. Despite two more holeshots for Mike Alessi, Dungey (rocking the all-new 2013 Fox motocross apparel) won the first moto going away, and was well on his way to winning moto2 when he fell. He later had to make a pit stop for fuel lost in the crash and was forced to take second, but it has become clear that only mistakes by Ryan Dungey can beat Ryan Dungey here in 2012. Give the man his trophy already! Alessi, the only man within 100 points of Dungey had another strong 2/3  showing- but he is clearly playing for second. Time to wish RV2, Reedy and Bubba speedy recoveries so that we have a more exciting SX 2013 in a few months! As for the results from this weekend? Here ya go:

We’ll see you all next week in New Berlin, NY – for another big MX party in Unadilla. The racing there has always been exceptional, and you can expect that tradition to continue as the 2012 heads down the final stretch!

And, for dessert, enjoy this video look into the action there at Southwick – LOVE IT!

CL has been blogging it up for BTO Sports since the days when Bob "Hurricane" Hannah ruled the motocross roost. In fact, his guerilla-style coverage of the now-infamous "Massacre at Saddleback" is now considered one of the great MX blogs of all time. Enjoy the blogs, folks- that's the whole idea!
