How Long Are Supercross Races? Race Lengths for 450SX, 250SX, Heats, and LCQ

The 450SX main event is 20 minutes plus one lap. The 250SX is 15 minutes plus one lap. Heat races run about 8 laps. And the LCQ — the last-chance race before the mains — gives riders 4 laps to punch their ticket. Here's the full race length breakdown and what a complete Supercross event evening looks like from practice to checkered flag.

The 450SX Main Event runs 20 minutes plus one lap. The 250SX Main Event runs 15 minutes plus one lap. Heat races run approximately 8 laps each. The Last Chance Qualifier gives the final transfer spots in a shorter race before the mains. If you're planning to watch a full event, block out around five to six hours from gates-open to checkered flag.

450SX Main Event Length

The 450 Class main event runs 20 minutes plus one lap. The clock counts down from 20:00 at the gate drop. When the timer hits zero, a board signals the final lap — whoever leads at that point wins if they can hold on. In most races the 450 main event is decided in about 22–24 minutes of actual race time depending on lap pace and track conditions.

Twenty laps is a common rough equivalent, but laps per race vary by track design. Tighter, more technical tracks take longer per lap than wide-open designs. The 20 minutes plus one lap format keeps the race duration consistent regardless of the track layout.

250SX Main Event Length

The 250 Class main event runs 15 minutes plus one lap. The shorter format reflects the 250's role as the development class — tighter racing, younger riders, and a format that keeps intensity high from start to finish. In practice, 250 mains run approximately 17–19 minutes of total race time.

The 250SX class is split regionally throughout the season. The East and West regions do not race at every round together, so you'll see one 250 class per night depending on the event location.

Heat Race Length

Heat races run approximately 8 laps per heat, which typically takes 7–10 minutes at race pace. There are multiple heats per class — usually two or three — and the top finishers from each heat transfer directly to the main event. Heat race transfers are the clean path to the main, and riders who don't transfer head to the LCQ.

Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ)

The LCQ is the last opportunity for non-transfers to make the main event. It runs roughly 5–6 minutes, or approximately four laps, and only the top four finishers advance to the main. The LCQ produces some of the night's most desperate racing — every rider in it knows they need a top-four finish or they're done for the night.

Triple Crown Format Race Lengths

On Triple Crown nights, the standard main events are replaced by three shorter mains. Each 450SX Triple Crown main runs approximately 10 minutes plus one lap. The 250SX mains are proportionally shorter. Points are scored in each of the three mains, and combined totals determine the round winner.
