Shoei Motocross Helmets: VFX-EVO Off-Road MX Helmet, Hand-Built in Japan | BTO Sports
Premium MX.
No Compromises.
Shoei was founded in 1959 by Eitaro Kamata in Japan, inspired by seeing a custom-painted helmet on a Honda test rider and deciding to build the best motorcycle helmet he could make. Every helmet Shoei produces today is still manufactured in Japan using advanced composite materials and a hand-crafted build process. The VFX-EVO is their current motocross and off-road helmet, built with a four shell-size construction and a fully removable interior system. At BTO Sports, we carry the Shoei VFX-EVO for riders who want Japanese-built quality in an off-road helmet.

Why we like Shoei
Shoei has been building helmets for 65 years and has never outsourced production out of Japan, which shows in the consistency and quality that comes through in every helmet they make. The VFX-EVO uses four shell sizes across the adult size range so that the geometry stays accurate at each size rather than stretching one shell to fit too many head circumferences. The removable 3D Max-Dry interior wicks sweat and comes out for washing, which extends how long the liner stays fresh. Shoei's free cheekpad customization, where they swap the standard 35mm pads to 31mm on request, is one of the most underappreciated fitting tools in helmets because cheekpad thickness has a significant effect on how secure and comfortable a helmet feels. Malcolm Stewart races Shoei in Supercross. Grant Baylor and Rachael Archer, two GNCC champions, run Shoei in enduro. That is a real-world testing record that backs the design.
FAQ
-
The VFX-EVO is Shoei's current motocross and off-road helmet. It is designed for MX, enduro, and cross-country racing with a fully removable interior, four shell sizes for accurate geometry across the size range, a large eyeport for oversized goggles, and ventilation tuned for off-road riding. It sits at the premium end of the MX helmet market, above Bell's mid-range options but alongside Arai's VX-Pro4 in terms of Japanese-built quality and price. It is for riders who have decided to invest at the top of the helmet category.

Shoei helmets are built around an intermediate oval shape, which is slightly longer front-to-back than side-to-side. This is a common head shape for North American and European riders and Shoei fits a wide range of riders well because of it. The VFX-EVO runs true to measured circumference size. Cheekpad thickness matters significantly for Shoei fit: the standard 35mm pads are replaced free of charge with 31mm pads for riders who need more room around the cheeks. Measure the largest circumference of your head about one inch above the eyebrows and match to the Shoei size chart.

Bell dominates the MX market by volume with multiple price tiers from entry to flagship carbon. Bell fits rounder head shapes well and runs more factory team sponsorships in AMA motocross. Arai is the other Japanese hand-built premium option, known for the R75 shell engineering standard and multi-density EPS. Shoei's advantage over Bell at the premium level is the hand-built Japanese construction and the Max-Dry interior system. Against Arai, Shoei tends to fit a slightly broader range of head shapes due to the intermediate oval geometry and the cheekpad customization program. Both are excellent helmets and the decision often comes down to individual fit.

Yes. Shoei manufactures every helmet in Japan using hand-crafted processes that the company has maintained since 1960. The shell construction uses advanced organic fiber and composite materials applied by hand rather than automated production. Shoei has not outsourced manufacturing. For riders who want to know exactly where and how their helmet was made, Shoei is one of the few brands that can point to a single factory in Japan and say every helmet goes through the same process.

Shoei's VFX-EVO ships with 35mm cheekpads as standard. For riders who find the standard cheekpads create too much pressure or the fit feels tight around the face, Shoei offers a free swap to 31mm cheekpads. This is available through authorized Shoei dealers. Cheekpad thickness is one of the most effective ways to fine-tune helmet fit after the shell size is established, and Shoei's willingness to swap them without charge is a genuine customer service distinction. Reach out to our BTO team and we can help you get the right pads for your fit.

In Supercross and Pro Motocross, Malcolm Stewart rides Shoei. In off-road and GNCC competition, Shoei sponsors Grant Baylor, a two-time GNCC champion, Rachael Archer, a three-time GNCC champion, and Stu Baylor. Ben Kelley, the GNCC champion who also rides for the FMF KTM Factory Racing Team, has been associated with Shoei. The off-road and enduro presence reflects Shoei's commitment to the riding that demands the most from helmet protection: sustained high-speed riding over rough terrain.
-
Yes. The VFX-EVO has a large eyeport designed to accommodate oversized goggle frames including wider options from 100%, Scott, and Oakley. The fit between the goggle foam and the helmet's goggle channel is something riders should verify with their specific goggle, as different helmet and goggle combinations vary, but the VFX-EVO's eyeport dimensions are specifically designed to work with the current generation of performance goggles.
-
The VFX-EVO is DOT certified for the US market. Shoei helmets are engineered to strict internal standards that consistently exceed regulatory minimums, which is a reflection of the company's commitment to building the best helmet possible rather than building to a minimum specification. For riders competing in events that require specific certifications beyond DOT, verify the current certification status of the VFX-EVO with our BTO team or Shoei's current product documentation.
